5 ways to visually increase the height of the ceiling

Of course, it is physically impossible to raise the ceiling, but you can get rid of the oppressive sensation from above using some decorating techniques. They are quite simple and available for implementation during the renovation process.

Visual unification

In a room with low ceilings, it is not recommended to use wide ceiling plinths, ornate fillets, since they clearly indicate the height of the walls.

When it is necessary to visually increase the height of the room, you need to do exactly the opposite: visually smooth the border between the plane of the walls and ceiling, presenting them as a single whole.

This effect can be achieved by using the same materials in the decoration of different surfaces. For example, paint the walls and ceiling with the same paint. Moreover, it does not have to be white at all, any soft pastel shades will do.

If you have chosen a contrasting color for the walls, paint the ceiling plinth with it so that it looks like an extension of the walls.

Vertical lines

Fashion designers know very well that women are slimmed down by a dress made of vertical striped fabric, and the same rule applies to interior decoration.

The most common option in this case is wallpaper with a corresponding pattern. Common, but not the only one. Vertical stripes can be created in other ways, for example, add them in the process of painting the walls, lay the tiles in vertical rows.

In addition to the usual stripes, you can use vertically elongated diamond patterns. They create a similar optical effect.

Curiously, a diagonal line can work in a similar way.

We combine furniture

Furniture for rooms with low ceilings is usually chosen low: squat sofas and armchairs are confusing, giving the impression that the distance to the ceiling is higher than the real one.

The exceptions are cabinets, which can be made tall and narrow, as well as vertical panels, mirrors and other accessories.

Ombre effect

A more complicated method is painting the walls using the ombre technique. It is a gradient transition from one shade to another with no clear border. The lower part of the wall is painted in a darker tone, and then the shade is gradually washed out until it turns almost white.

The smooth flow of color tricks the brain, visually pushing the plane of the ceiling, which makes the room seem larger than it is.

Switching attention

In addition to or in addition to the methods listed above, you can use one more technique: switch attention from disadvantages to advantages. A bright color accent on the wall, noble flooring, designer carpet in rich colors can distract from low ceilings.

When attention is focused on a certain point, the height of the ceilings is less conspicuous.
